Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Salmon (in the method)
Forms the main body of the dish, supplying the fish flavor and flaky texture.
Flour
Thickens the milk and butter into a smooth, pourable cream sauce.
Butter
Adds richness and fat to the cream sauce, carrying flavor.
Milk
Forms the liquid base of the cream sauce, giving it a creamy body.

The step that matters

Pour the hot cream sauce over the salmon. The sauce should be hot and smooth when it is poured, because heat keeps it fluid and spreads it evenly over the salmon and toast.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, flour, milk, pepper):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Nutmegfits about as well
  3. Cardamomfits about as well
  4. Parsleythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, flour, milk, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
