Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes (in the method)
Form the bulk of the dish, browning on the pan surface while staying tender inside.
Butter
Conducts heat and adds fat for browning and a rich flavor.
Onion
Adds savoury sweetness and aroma as it softens in the butter.

The step that matters

Stir the potatoes very carefully with a fork. Gentle stirring keeps the cubes intact and lets them form a browned crust on their faces. Stirring too hard breaks the potatoes apart and leaves them mushy rather than crisp at the edges.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, butter, parsley):

  1. Carrotfits better
  2. Shallotfits better
  3. Potatofits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against pepper, butter, parsley. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
