Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Flour
Provides the structure that holds the cake's crumb together as it bakes.
Egg
Adds structure, richness and binding to the batter.
Apple sauce
Adds moisture and a tender crumb to the cake.
Baking soda
Reacts with acidic ingredients to leaven the cake and help it rise.

The step that matters

Beat all together. Once the sifted flour is in, beating too long develops gluten, which can make the cake tough and dense. Mix only until the flour is just combined.
