Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Corn starch
Thickens the milk mixture into a smooth, sliceable custard as it cooks.
Milk
Forms the liquid base of the custard that the starch thickens.
Chocolate
Provides the chocolate flavor and deep color of the filling.
Sugar
Sweetens the filling and balances the bitterness of the chocolate.
Whipped cream
Adds richness and a light, airy texture to the cooled filling.

The step that matters

Cook for 10 minutes, stirring all the time. Corn starch only thickens fully when heated with constant stirring; stopping early or letting it sit leaves lumps or a runny filling, and the mixture can scorch on the bottom of the pan.
