Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Form the bulk of the dish and absorb the cream sauce, giving a soft interior.
Cream sauce
Provides moisture and richness so the potatoes stay creamy rather than drying in the oven.
American edam cheese
Melts into the top and browns, adding savoury flavour and a golden crust.

The step that matters

Bake only until golden brown. Baking too long evaporates moisture from the cream sauce and dries the potatoes, so the dish should be removed as soon as the top browns.

Swap the white pepper

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, cream, sauce, cheese):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Capersfits better
  4. White pepperthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against potato, cream, sauce, cheese. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
