What each ingredient does

Cucumbers
Form the main body of the pickle, becoming crisp-tender once brined and simmered.
Salt
Draws water out of the cucumbers, firming their texture and seasoning them before pickling.
Vinegar
Provides the sharp acidity that preserves the pickles and gives them their tang.
Sugar
Balances the acidity of the vinegar and adds sweetness to the pickling liquid.

The step that matters

Pack into jars immediately. Hot cucumbers packed right away keep their internal temperature high and help the jars seal properly. Letting them cool before packing can allow spoilage risk and weaker seals.

Swap the cucumber

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (vinegar, sugar):

  1. Mustardfits better
  2. Capsicumfits about as well
  3. Cucumberthe original
  4. Beetrootfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against vinegar, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
