What each ingredient does

Rich biscuit dough
Forms a tender, flaky crust that encloses the apples and syrup while baking.
Cooking apples
Provide the fruit filling that softens and becomes tender in the oven.
Sugar
Sweetens the apples and helps form the syrup in the pan.
Butter
Adds richness and fat that enriches the filling and syrup.

Swap the nutmeg

The recipe marks nutmeg as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (biscuit, apple, sugar, butter, walnut):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Nutmegthe original
  3. Capersfits less well
  4. Sagefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against biscuit, apple, sugar, butter, walnut. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
