Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main flavour and body of the soup.
Milk
Gives the soup its creamy texture and mild sweetness.
Baking powder
Helps keep the milk from curdling when it meets the acidic tomatoes.
Rolled crackers
Thicken the soup as they soak up liquid and soften.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth, rounded mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Adding the milk. Milk is prone to curdling when combined with acidic tomatoes and heat. The baking powder is added alongside the milk to help keep it smooth, so the milk should be added with that protection in place rather than on its own.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, egg, butter, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Asparagusfits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against milk, egg, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
