Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomato
Provides the main body and flavour of the soup.
Flour
Thickens the soup as its starch swells during cooking.
Cream
Adds richness and a smoother, softer mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Adding the flour paste. Flour must be mixed into a smooth paste with cold water before it goes into the hot soup, because dry or lumpy flour clumps and does not thicken evenly. Cooking afterward lets the starch fully swell and lose its raw taste.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, flour, sugar, cream):

  1. Arrowrootfits better
  2. Spinachfits better
  3. Capsicumfits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against pepper, flour, sugar, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
