Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Flour
Thickens the milk into a creamy, smooth soup.
Butter
Enriches the soup and helps the flour blend smoothly into the milk.
Milk
Forms the creamy base of the soup.
Celery
Provides the main flavor, cooked into the stock.

The step that matters

Gradually stirring the flour and butter into the hot milk. Adding the flour-butter mixture slowly and stirring keeps it dispersed, so it thickens evenly instead of forming lumps.

Swap the onion

The recipe marks onion as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (flour, butter, milk, celery, pepper):

  1. Carrotfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Capsicumfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against flour, butter, milk, celery, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
