Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Round steak
Forms the wrapped outer layer and cooks into tender, savory meat when rolled thin.
Beaten egg
Acts as a binder so the cracker crumbs stick to the outside of each roll.
Cracker crumbs
Form a crisp, golden coating that browns when fried.
Onion
Adds sweetness and aroma to the savory filling as it cooks.

The step that matters

Securing the rolls before frying. If the rolls are not rolled tightly and fastened with toothpicks, they can unroll in the hot fat and the filling can leak out. Tight rolling keeps the layers together while the surface sets and browns.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (parsley, egg):

  1. Shallotfits better
  2. Chivefits better
  3. Carrotfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against parsley, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
