Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Starchy base that becomes soft and mealy when boiled and mashed.
Cream
Adds moisture and richness to the mashed potatoes.
Butter
Adds fat for flavour and a smooth, rich texture.

The step that matters

Squeeze to make them mealy. Potatoes are fragile once cooked and can turn gluey if overworked. Squeezing gently in a cloth drains excess moisture and loosens the starch, giving a light, mealy texture instead of a dense mash.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cream, butter):

  1. Potatothe original
  2. Onionfits about as well
  3. Leekfits less well
  4. Chivefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against cream, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
