Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Whites provide the structure that holds the filling, and yolks form the creamy base.
Butter
Adds fat that makes the mashed yolk filling smooth and rich.
Minced ham
Adds savory flavor and a little texture to the yolk filling.
Mustard
Adds sharp, tangy flavor that balances the richness of the yolks.

The step that matters

Divide the whites carefully. Cutting the cooked whites gently keeps them intact so they can hold the filling. Tearing them leaves gaps and weakens the shape.

Swap the onion

The recipe marks onion as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, butter, ham, pepper, mustard):

  1. Shallotfits better
  2. Asparagusfits better
  3. Chivefits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, butter, ham, pepper, mustard. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
