Stewed Onions

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare

  1. Trim, tail, and skin the onions.

  2. Soak them in cold water for at least 30 minutes.

Stew

  1. Place the onions in a saucepan and cover with hot water.

  2. When half cooked, drain all but 1 cup of water.

  3. Add the milk, butter, salt, and pepper.

  4. Stew gently until tender, then transfer to a deep dish.

  5. If the onions are strong, boil them in three changes of water, discarding the first two and keeping a little of the third to mix with the milk.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Onions
Form the main body of the dish and soften into a tender, mild vegetable base.
Milk
Adds creaminess and mellows the sharp sulfur flavour of the onions.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth, rounded fat to the stewed onions.

The step that matters

Stew gently until tender. Gentle heat lets onions soften evenly without boiling apart or scorching. Cooking them too hard can make them mushy or break the milk-based sauce.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, butter, pepper):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Tomatofits about as well
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against milk, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
