Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Dissolve yeast foam cake in a little water.

  2. Pour hot water into a bowl with lard.

  3. Mix in milk, molasses, sugar, and salt.

  4. Add flour until the mixture is stiff enough to stir with a spoon.

  5. Pour into tins and let rise in a warm place until light.

  6. Bake for over 1 hour at 350°F (175°C).
