  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Cream the butter and sugar together.

  3. Gradually add the milk, then the egg whites, flour, cream of tartar, and baking soda.

  4. Mix well and pour into jelly tins.

  5. For the filling, blanch and pound the almonds finely.

  6. Beat the whites and yolks of 2 eggs together lightly.

  7. Add 1½ cups sugar and the almonds, along with 1 tablespoon vanilla.

  8. Spread the filling between the layers of cake.
