Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Creamed with sugar to trap air, giving the cake a tender, rich crumb.
Sugar
Creamed with butter to add sweetness and help create a light texture.
Eggs
Beaten to add air and structure, and they set as the cake bakes.
Flour
Provides the structure that holds the cake together as it bakes.

The step that matters

Adding the eggs and flour alternately. Adding them in alternating portions helps the batter stay emulsified and absorb the flour evenly. Adding everything at once or too quickly can cause curdling or a dense, heavy crumb.
