Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Make a good pie crust.

Assemble the pie

  1. Line the sides of a deep pudding dish with the crust, leaving the bottom uncovered.

  2. Layer the steak, potatoes, and eggs alternately in the dish.

  3. Season each layer with salt, pepper, and ginger.

  4. Make two layers of each ingredient.

  5. Sprinkle a little water over the top and cover with pie crust.

Bake

  1. Bake for one hour.

What each ingredient does

Raw steak
Provides the main meat filling, which becomes tender and flavourful as it cooks in the oven.
Boiled potatoes
Adds bulk and a soft, starchy body that soaks up the savoury juices.
Hard-boiled eggs
Adds richness and a firm, sliced texture between the meat and potato layers.

Swap the ginger

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, egg, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Dillfits better
  3. Nutmegfits better
  4. Gingerthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against potato, egg, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
