Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Asparagus
Provides the main flavour and body of the soup once pressed through a colander.
Milk
Forms the liquid base of the soup and gives it a creamy, smooth texture.
Flour
Thickens the soup when cooked with butter and hot milk.
Butter
Adds richness and helps form a smooth roux with the flour.

The step that matters

Adding the hot milk to the butter and flour. Stirring continually as the hot milk goes in keeps the flour dispersed, which prevents lumps and lets the mixture thicken smoothly.

Swap the asparagus

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, flour, butter, pepper):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Chivefits about as well
  4. Asparagusthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against milk, flour, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
