Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a bowl, combine the chopped beefsteak, beaten eggs, and milk.

  3. Grease a loaf tin with butter and pour the mixture into it.

Bake and serve

  1. Bake for 1½ hours, basting often with cold milk.

  2. Once cooked, turn the loaf onto a platter.

  3. Use the basting liquid to make gravy by adding flour.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beefsteak
Forms the bulk of the loaf, giving it its meaty body and structure.
Eggs
Bind the meat together and help the loaf hold its shape when cooked.
Milk
Adds moisture to the mixture and to the basting liquid, keeping the loaf tender.
Flour
Thickens the basting liquid into gravy.

The step that matters

Basting with cold milk. Basting during a long bake keeps the surface moist, but cold milk added to a hot pan can cool the surface unevenly; spooning it on gently helps the loaf stay tender without drying out.
