Mock Mince Pie

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point. The book gives no cooking times either; the times in the steps were added in transcription, so check for doneness rather than trusting the clock.

Prepare the filling

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a bowl, combine the crushed crackers, sugar, molasses, and vinegar or boiled cider.

  3. Melt the butter and mix it into the bowl.

  4. Add the seeded raisins and beaten eggs, stirring until well combined.

  5. Add spices to taste and pour the mixture into a pie crust.

Bake

  1. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until set.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Crackers
Crushed crackers replace apples and bulk out the filling, giving body to the mixture.
Eggs
Beaten eggs set when baked, holding the filling together as it cooks.
Molasses
Adds dark sweetness and a deep flavour, and helps the filling brown.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, softening the texture of the filling.
Vinegar or boiled cider
Provides acidity that brightens the sweet, dense filling.

The step that matters

Bake until set. Baking sets the beaten eggs and thickens the filling; underbaking leaves it runny, while overbaking can make it dry and tough.

Swap the raisin

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, molasses, vinegar, butter, egg):

  1. Vanillafits about as well
  2. Raisinthe original
  3. Figfits about as well
  4. Strawberryfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, molasses, vinegar, butter, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
