Delicious Cake

Oven, in the book's wordsA moderate oven

Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Cream together the butter and sugar.

  2. Add the milk and vanilla, alternating with sifted dry ingredients.

  3. Fold in the egg whites, then add the melted chocolate.

  4. Bake in a moderate oven at 350°F (175°C) until done.

  5. For the filling, mix corn starch and sugar with a little cold milk.

  6. Add the slightly beaten eggs.

  7. Heat the rest of the milk and add it to the first mixture.

  8. Cook in a double boiler until thick, adding butter while hot.

  9. When cool, add flavoring and nuts, then spread on the layers.
