What each ingredient does

Peaches
Provide the fruit that is set in the gelatin and give the dessert its flavor.
Sugar
Sweetens the drained juice and balances the flavor of the set dessert.
Gelatin
Sets the liquid into a jelly as it cools and chills.

The step that matters

Stirring the gelatin into the hot syrup off the heat. Gelatin must fully dissolve evenly for the jelly to set smoothly. Adding it off the heat avoids boiling, which can weaken gelatin's setting power.

Swap the peach

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, gelatin, cream):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Strawberryfits better
  3. Raspberryfits about as well
  4. Peachthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, gelatin, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
