Why it works: Celery and parsley match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 6,810 recipes. Both carry 4'-methylacetophenone, which smells bitter almond. The science ↓

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Potatoes
- Break down into starch that thickens the soup and gives it body.
- Milk
- Forms the liquid base and adds creaminess and mild sweetness.
- Butter
- Adds fat for richness and a smooth, silky mouthfeel.
- Whipped cream
- Adds extra richness and a light, cool texture at serving.
The step that matters
Straining the mashed potatoes into the milk. Straining removes fibres and lumps so the soup turns smooth. Returning it to heat with milk can scorch or curdle if it boils hard, so bring it up gently.
Swap the mace
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, celery, onion, milk, butter, pepper, parsley):
- Thymefits better
- Dillfits better
- Marjoramfits better
- Macethe original
Fit is the average pairing score against potato, celery, onion, milk, butter, pepper, parsley. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
