Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Bake and open

  1. Bake the potatoes at 400°F (200°C) until mealy.

  2. Remove the potatoes from the oven and cut them open.

  3. Carefully scoop out the insides without tearing the skins.

Season and refill

  1. Season the potato insides with salt, pepper, and plenty of butter.

  2. Refill the skins with the seasoned mixture, close them up, and return to the oven to brown.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Provide the starchy flesh that becomes fluffy when baked and scooped out.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, carrying flavour and moistening the mashed potato filling.

The step that matters

Carefully scoop out the insides without tearing the skins. The skins act as edible shells that must hold the filling. A torn skin lets the mixture leak and the potato cannot be refilled neatly, so scoop with a spoon while the potato is still warm but firm enough to handle.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, butter):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatothe original
  3. Carrotfits less well
  4. Onionfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
