What each ingredient does

Bread crumbs
Form the bulk of the layers and soak up the milk to give the pudding body.
Apple sauce
Adds moisture and fruity sweetness that keeps the layers tender as they bake.
Butter
Adds richness and fat that carries flavour and helps the top brown.
Milk
Soaks into the bread crumbs and sets during baking to form a custard-like texture.
