Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

Make the batter

  1. Sift together the flour, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, corn starch, chocolate, and baking soda.

  2. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and add the apple sauce.

  3. Combine the dry ingredients with the butter mixture until well blended.

  4. Pour the batter into a greased baking pan.

Bake

  1. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 40 minutes.
