Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Celery
Provides the main flavour and bulk of the soup.
Milk
Adds creaminess, richness and body to the broth.
Flour
Thickens the liquid as its starch swells when heated in it.

The step that matters

Thickening with flour. Flour starch only thickens when heated in liquid, so it needs time to cook. Adding it gradually and stopping at the stated thickness prevents a lumpy or pasty soup.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, pepper, flour):

  1. Cardamomfits better
  2. Cinnamonfits better
  3. Turmericfits better
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against milk, pepper, flour. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
