Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bread crumbs
Provides the bulk and body that holds the pudding together as it steams.
Suet
Adds fat that keeps the pudding moist and rich as it cooks.
Eggs
Bind the mixture and help it set firm when cooked.
Apples
Add moisture and a tart, fruity flavour that balances the sweetness.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps give the pudding a tender texture.

The step that matters

Adding flour as needed. Flour thickens the moist mixture so it holds its shape in the mold. Adding too much makes the pudding dense and heavy, while too little leaves it loose and wet after steaming.

Swap the currant

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (bread, egg, apple, raisin, milk, flour, sugar):
