Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main body, flavour and colour of the soup.
Onions
Add savoury sweetness and aromatic depth to the base.
Milk
Adds creaminess and softens the acidity of the tomatoes.
Cornflour
Thickens the soup as it is heated, giving it body.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth, rounded mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Thicken the soup with cornflour. Cornflour must be fully heated in the liquid to swell and thicken; added to cold liquid or left unheated it stays grainy or thin, and it can clump if not mixed in smoothly first.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, milk, butter):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Leekfits better
