Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Old fowl
Provides the meat and body-building flavor for the broth.
Hard-boiled eggs
Their pounded yolks add richness and body to the soup.
Milk
Adds creaminess and a smooth, rich mouthfeel to the soup.
Onion
Adds savory aroma and depth to the broth.

The step that matters

Cool and skim the soup. Fat rises and solidifies as the soup cools, so chilling before skimming lets you lift most of it off cleanly, leaving a lighter, less greasy cream soup.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, milk):

  1. Asparagusfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Capsicumfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, milk. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
