Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Break down when boiled to give the soup its body and thickness.
Milk
Adds creaminess and loosens the purée to the desired consistency.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the finished soup.

The step that matters

Passing the mixture through a fine sieve. Cooked potatoes and vegetables must be fully softened before sieving, otherwise lumps remain and the soup turns out grainy rather than smooth.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, milk, butter):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Nutmegfits about as well
  3. Parsleythe original
  4. Thymefits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against potato, milk, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
