What each ingredient does

Apricots
Soften in the syrup and provide the fruity sweetness and aroma of the dish.
Milk roll
Forms the base; frying in butter gives it a golden, crisp surface.
Butter
Fat for frying the bread, adding browning and richness to the rounds.
Sugar
Sweetens the syrup and helps it thicken slightly as it simmers.
Sherry
Adds acidity and aroma to the syrup.

The step that matters

Frying the rounds until golden brown. Bread that is undercooked stays soft and soaks up syrup unevenly, while over-browned rounds turn bitter. Gentle, even heat gives an even golden crust that holds up under the wet fruit.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, sherry, apricot, milk, butter, cream):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Sweet potatofits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, sherry, apricot, milk, butter, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
