What each ingredient does

Rump steak
Provides the main meat, whose connective tissue softens into tender bite during long cooking.
Oysters
Add a briny, savoury flavour that deepens the taste of the beef.
All-purpose flour
Thickens the seasoning and juices so the filling sets into a cohesive sauce.
Shallots
Add mild sweetness and aromatic depth to the seasoning.
Gravy
Adds moisture and savoury body to the filling, keeping the meat from drying out.

The step that matters

Baking until cooked through. Rump steak is tough and needs a long, steady bake for its connective tissue to break down; underbaking leaves the meat chewy and the filling thin.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (shallot, pepper, flour, oyster):

  1. Capersfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Turmericfits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against shallot, pepper, flour, oyster. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
