Bread and Butter Pudding

Oven, in the book's wordsA moderately hot oven

Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a moderately hot oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Cut thin slices of bread and butter one side of each slice.

  2. Place a layer of bread, butter side up, in a pie dish.

  3. Scatter soaked currants and raisins over the bread.

  4. Add another layer of bread and more currants and raisins, repeating until the dish is three-quarters full.

  5. Do not press the bread down.

  6. Pour hot custard into the dish gradually, allowing the bread to absorb it.

  7. Bake in a moderate oven at 350°F (175°C) until done.
