Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Dried peas
Break down during long boiling to give the soup its body and thickness.
Butter
Stirred in at the end to add richness and a smooth, velvety mouthfeel.
Onions
Build savoury flavour as they soften and sweeten during the long simmer.
Turnips
Add mild sweetness and earthy flavour that rounds out the soup.

The step that matters

Adding more water during the second boil. As the peas continue to cook they absorb liquid and thicken the soup. Adding water keeps the texture from becoming too stiff and prevents scorching on the bottom of the pot.

Swap the peas
