Baked Berry Rolls

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare the rolls

  1. Roll the biscuit dough thin and cut it into squares, 4 inches wide and 7 inches long.

  2. Spread berries over each square.

  3. Roll up the squares and place them in a dripping pan, leaving a little space between each roll.

Add toppings and bake

  1. Place a piece of butter on each roll and sprinkle with spices if desired.

  2. Strew a large handful of sugar over the rolls.

  3. Add a little hot water.

  4. Bake in a 400°F (200°C) oven until golden brown, similar to dumplings.

Serve

  1. Serve with sweet sauce.

What each ingredient does

Rich biscuit dough
Forms the tender, flaky wrapper that encloses the berries and bakes golden.
Berries
Provide the juicy, tart filling that softens and sweetens during baking.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the tops brown as the rolls bake.
Sugar
Sweetens the rolls and helps the surface caramelize to a golden color.
