Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Canned tomatoes
Form the body and the tangy, acidic flavour of the soup.
Flour
Thickens the soup as its starch cooks in the hot liquid.
Butter
Adds fat that enriches the flavour and helps the flour blend smoothly.
Sugar
Softens the tomato's acidity with a small amount of sweetness.

The step that matters

Stir in the flour and butter mixture. Flour clumps if it is not dispersed evenly into the liquid. Boiling the mixture for the full 15 minutes cooks the starch, which thickens the soup and removes the raw floury taste.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (flour, butter, sugar):

  1. Arrowrootfits better
  2. Shallotfits better
  3. Sweet potatofits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against flour, butter, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
