Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Oysters
Provide the main savoury flavour and tender texture when briefly cooked until browned.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the oysters brown in the hot pan.
Toast
Forms a crisp-edged base that soaks up the pan liquor.
Oyster liquor
Concentrates in the pan and adds briny moisture and flavour to the dish.

The step that matters

Cook in a hot oven until browned. Oysters are delicate and overcook quickly, turning rubbery and shrinking. A very hot pan and oven sear the outside fast, so they brown while staying tender inside.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, oyster):

  1. Capersfits about as well
  2. Parsleythe original
  3. Nutmegfits about as well
  4. Thymefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, oyster. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
