Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a slow oven”. The 300°F (150°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

Prepare

  1. Remove the skins from the bananas and cut them in half lengthwise.

  2. Place the bananas in a shallow baking dish or on a platter.

Bake

  1. Mix the melted butter, sugar, and lemon juice together.

  2. Baste the bananas with half of the mixture.

  3. Bake in a 300°F (150°C) oven for 20 minutes, basting with the remaining mixture during baking.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bananas
Provide the main body of the dish, softening and becoming tender as they bake.
Melted butter
Adds fat and moisture, helping the bananas brown lightly and stay glossy.
Sugar
Sweetens the dish and promotes browning as it caramelises in the oven.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the sweetness and balances the flavour of the bananas.

The step that matters

Basting with the remaining mixture during baking. Basting keeps the banana surfaces moist and coated with butter and sugar, so they brown evenly rather than drying out or scorching in the oven's heat.

Swap the lemon
