Why it works: Oyster and butter are a kitchen classic. They rank in the top 12% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 8,184 recipes. Both carry 2,6-nonadienal, which smells cucumber, green. The science ↓
Fried Oysters
Ingredients
Directions
Prepare
If using canned oysters, rinse them in cold water and let them drain for 1 minute.
Crush the oyster crackers finely using a rolling pin and mix with salt and pepper in a pie plate.
Coat each oyster in the cracker mixture and place them on a large plate.
Fry and serve
Heat the butter in a frying pan until hot enough to brown (test with one oyster).
Fry the oysters one at a time for 1 minute on each side until golden brown.
Transfer the fried oysters to a warm chafing dish and serve hot.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Oysters
- Main ingredient; the coating and quick frying cook them through while keeping the centre tender.
- Oyster crackers
- Crushed into crumbs to form a crisp, golden coating on each oyster.
- Butter
- Fat for the pan that browns the coating and adds rich flavour.
The step that matters
Heat the butter until it just browns. If the pan is too cool, the coating absorbs butter and turns greasy; if too hot, it burns before the oysters cook. The test oyster shows when the butter is ready.
