Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sweet potatoes
Provide the starchy base that softens into a tender, creamy interior when cooked.
Butter
Adds fat that melts into the flesh, enriching flavor and keeping it moist.
Sugar
Sweetens the potatoes and caramelizes in the oven to give a browned, glossy top.

The step that matters

Steam or boil until nearly done. The potatoes should be almost tender before baking, because the oven finishes the cooking. Fully cooking them first can leave the flesh mushy or dry, and undercooking leaves a firm center that the short bake may not soften.

Swap the sweet potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper, sugar):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits about as well
  3. Sweet potatothe original
  4. Mustardfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
