Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beets
Provide the main body and earthy flavour of the pickle.
Vinegar
Acidity that preserves the beets and gives the pickle its sharp taste.
Sugar
Balances the vinegar's sharpness with sweetness.
Ground cloves
Add warm, aromatic spice flavour to the pickling liquid.

The step that matters

Pouring the boiling hot mixture over the beets. The liquid must be fully hot when poured so the beets are evenly penetrated and the pickle is kept safely acidic. Hot liquid also helps the flavours soak into the beet pieces more readily than cool liquid would.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (vinegar, sugar):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Tarragonfits better
  3. Peppermintfits better
