Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a warm oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

Prepare the custard

  1. Soak the bread crumbs in milk.

  2. Beat the eggs, then add sugar, salt, butter, and spice.

  3. Stir the egg mixture into the soaked bread and milk.

Bake and serve

  1. Pour into a baking dish and bake for 1 hour at 350°F (175°C).

  2. If desired, add 1 square of melted chocolate.

Eggs
Set during baking to bind the pudding into a custard-like texture.
Milk
Provides the liquid that soaks the bread and forms the custard with the eggs.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps the top brown during baking.
Butter
Adds fat, contributing richness and a tender crumb.
