Walnut Squares

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point. The book gives no cooking times either; the times in the steps were added in transcription, so check for doneness rather than trusting the clock.

Prepare the batter

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a bowl, cream together the butter and sugar.

  3. Add the beaten eggs and milk, mixing well.

  4. Stir in the flour, baking powder, chopped walnuts, and nutmeg or vanilla.

  5. Pour the batter into a greased baking sheet and spread evenly.

Bake and finish

  1. Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

  2. Once cool, cut into cubes and ice on 5 sides with boiled icing flavored with lemon.

  3. Top each square with half a walnut meat.

Baking powder
Releases gas during baking so the batter rises and becomes light.
