Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a slow oven”. The 300°F (150°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).

  2. In a bowl, combine sliced citron, lemon peel, chopped almonds, and grated nutmeg.

  3. Beat the eggs with sugar until well combined.

  4. Add milk and vanilla extract to the egg mixture and mix well.

  5. Layer the bread in a baking dish and pour the egg mixture over it.

  6. Bake in the preheated oven until set.

  7. Serve hot or cold.
