Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Asparagus
Provides the main flavour and, once cooked and pureed, the body of the soup.
Milk
Adds creaminess and softness, rounding out the vegetable flavour.
Cream
Adds richness and fat, giving the soup a smoother mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Rub the mixture through a colander. Pushing the cooked asparagus through a sieve breaks down the fibres and produces a smooth texture; leftover fibrous pieces make the soup gritty.

Swap the asparagus

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, cream, rice):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Asparagusthe original
  3. Leekfits about as well
  4. Sweet potatofits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against milk, cream, rice. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
