What each ingredient does

Asparagus
Forms the main vegetable filling, becoming soft and tender when stewed.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky texture to the asparagus.
Milk
Adds moisture and creaminess, and softens the zwieback.
Zwieback
Serves as the absorbent base that soaks up the hot milk and holds the topping.

The step that matters

Stew the asparagus until tender. Asparagus needs enough gentle heat and time to soften fully. Undercooked pieces stay fibrous and tough, while the cooking water helps carry heat evenly through the spears.

Swap the asparagus

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, butter):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Asparagusthe original
  3. Leekfits about as well
  4. Onionfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against milk, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
