What each ingredient does

Ham
Is the main ingredient that is cooked through by boiling and provides the dish's flavor and texture.

The step that matters

Boil constantly until fully cooked. Ham must be boiled for the full time because a bone showing does not mean it is done. Keeping the water at a steady boil maintains even heat so the thick meat cooks through to the center. Removing it early can leave the interior undercooked and unsafe.
