Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Butter a shallow or deep dish.

Layer

  1. Cover the bottom with rolled crackers and some pieces of butter.

  2. Add a layer of oysters, then another layer of crackers and butter.

  3. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with crackers and butter on top.

Bake

  1. Pour the oyster juice over the top and sprinkle with a little salt.

  2. Bake at 400°F (200°C) until heated through.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Oysters
Provide the main ingredient, releasing savoury juices that moisten the dish as it heats.
Rolled crackers
Form a crumbly layer that soaks up oyster juice and butter, adding texture and body.
Butter
Adds fat that enriches the crackers and helps the top brown as it bakes.

The step that matters

Bake until heated through. Oysters cook quickly and turn rubbery if overheated, so they should be heated just until firm and warmed through rather than baked for too long.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, oyster, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Thymefits about as well
  3. Sagefits about as well
  4. Nutmegthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, oyster, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
